Hi! I'm Dr. Deb and this is Winston, my meditation buddy. I am a qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Instructor as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I've owned a private practice in Allentown for 20+ years and have taught Mindfulness techniques to my clients for most of that time.
I have always struggled with anxiety; however, it wasn't until I found myself struggling with a chronic GI issue that I began to practice meditation and mindfulness on a daily basis. Prior to that time mindfulness was a set of tools I used and taught clients to use to help them cope with their anxiety, depression and everyday stress. About nine years ago I began struggling with some GI issues and for a year the medical community still couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. They removed my gall bladder and sent me through a battery of tests and still nothing. I struggled that way for almost a year until I remember one startling phone call when I received a phone call from a doctor's office and nurse on the other line reported to me the test for stomach cancer came back negative. It was in that moment I realized the gravity of my symptoms and I took my first Mindfulness course as a way to deal with my increasing stress as the medical community tried to figure out what was wrong with me.
Gratefully, thanks to a dear friend I figured out I have a gluten intolerance and I began to feel better but it was the Mindfulness that really helped me get through that stressful period of my life. It was then I decided I would start my journey to become qualified to teach Mindfulness. I decided to become a Qualified MBSR Instructor because it is the gold standard of Mindfulness programs and the one that has scientifically established its effectiveness in treating anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and GI issues over the last 50 years.
After three years of training and completing the required coursework and several residencies at the Center for Mindfulness (CFM) at the UMASS Medical School I became a Qualified MBSR Instructor. Since then, I have been honored to teach Mindfulness and MBSR at Lehigh Community College, The Institute for Retirement at Cedar Crest College, West End Yoga, South Whitehall Parks and Recreation, Allentown Parks and Recreation and in my local support groups and businesses in my community.
As I devote more time to the teaching of Mindfulness I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share this ancient art of mediation and mindfulness with others.
